I was just diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.
It’s in an early stage, next steps are a CT scan and a bone scan to see if it has spread.
The results of the scans will determine what happens after that.
When I had my annual physical this past January, my PSA was elevated at 5.3.
My doctor prescribed a two-week course of an anti-biotic followed by a PSA retest.
The retested PSA was 5.6.
My doctor referred me to a Urologist who examined me and performed a prostate biopsy.
The diagnosis was cancer.
An interesting note on that prostate biopsy: The doctor used an instrument that looked like a spear gun (ala Sea Hunt if you are old enough to remember that TV show). It was inserted into my rectum along with an ultrasound probe. About 12 samples were taken from my prostate.
The prescribed drugs taken before the biopsy made me not care that I had a spear gun and ultrasound probe in my rectum.
The moral (if any) to this story is: if you are male and aged 45-50 or older, make sure you get a PSA test and prostate exam annually.
