I had my first meeting with my oncologist today. He reviewed the biopsy and urology. He then explained how the beam and seed radiation techniques work.
Since my cancer’s Gleason score is 7 (3+4), one tumor is a bit more aggressive than the other. This introduces the risk that the slightly more aggressive tumor could move beyond the prostate and not be killed by the radioactive seed implant.
My oncologist recommended that I receive five weeks (25 visits) of external radiation to kill any escaping tumors. Then, a month or so after the radiation treatment, I would receive the radioactive seed implant to kill the rest of the cancer.
Since, I’m seeing my doctor this week, my oncologist requested that I get a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test so we’d have a baseline to measure the performance of the radiation treatment.
I made an appointment for next week for treatment planning and a CT scan. Once that has completed, we’ll move to the radiation treatment. More as it happens.
